Property Management Pathway

Introducing young adults to upwardly-mobile, living-wage careers within the real estate industry.

Tracey Montilus Gates Hudson Intern, Class of 2021, Greater Washington, DC This program is really teaching me where my future is going to align. It’s teaching me everything I feel like I need to progress and everything I will need in the future to succeed … Honestly, I don’t know where I would be if I was not in this program.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall of 2020, real estate companies, and grant makers joined forces with Urban Alliance to launch the Urban Alliance Property Management Pathway. This new career pathway connects high school students, and Urban Alliance alumni with paid, real-world work experience, experienced mentors, and industry training in leasing and maintenance to support their transition to part- or full-time work within the industry.

Watch this video featuring alumni Marquise Matthews and Travis Robertson sharing their program experience and working full-time in the property management industry.

How does the program work?

For Students

The Property Management Pathway (PMP) provides high school seniors in Urban Alliance’s signature High School Internship Program with professional skills training as well as industry training certified by the National Apartment Association. Interns can choose a pathway in either leasing or maintenance and earn a Certified Apartment Leasing Professional (CALP) credential or a Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT) credential.  The program is open to students enrolled in Chicago Public Schools, and recent high school graduates of Baltimore City Public Schools.

For Employers

Local residential real estate firms have the opportunity to build a diverse talent pipeline. Select from a diverse group of highly trained young adults just starting their careers for leasing or maintenance internships within your company. After completing certification training, students will begin 6-8 month internships, working 12 hours per week during the school year and 32 hours per week after graduation. Companies will get the first opportunity to hire interns at the conclusion of the program.
