Supporting Urban Alliance Youth During the COVID-19 Outbreak

Dear Friends,

These days, it feels as though we’re all watching the world change by the minute as we respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. Since our last message, the virus response has intensified in each of our regions. All of our students are now unable to report to work in person – though some are able to continue working remotely – joining the millions facing harsh economic realities around the world during this uncertain time.

The plain truth is that our students rely on their paychecks coming regularly:

  • 80% of interns contribute to household expenses.
  • 91% of interns qualify for free or reduced-priced meals, and with schools closed, may not be receiving three meals a day.
  • With colleges and universities closing their doors, some alumni are also losing access to on-campus jobs and housing.
  • Most interns also come from low-income communities, those hardest-hit by the spread of COVID-19.

We are launching a Student Support Fund to help Urban Alliance youth navigate this new reality. Please consider donating today to help our young people weather this storm.

Most of our students are already balancing the tricky transition from high school to adulthood, academics, and planning for their future – and now a global pandemic. They do not need or deserve the added burden of wondering if they will receive their next paycheck.

Wherever possible, UA is providing remote work options and additional workforce development training opportunities for our interns, and supporting our alumni with a range of referrals and other services. Unfortunately, we know this support is not enough. That’s why we are asking for your help today to support our youth.

Urban Alliance youth are resilient and hard-working, overcoming any barrier they face. With your support, that will continue. Thank you for standing by them during this difficult time.

With gratitude,

Eshauna Smith
CEO, Urban Alliance
